Empty Backpacks: Found, Filled, and Finally HOme

Psalm 107:9 - “For He satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul He fills with good things.”

She was eight years old when she appeared on their doorstep, small and silent, as if she had been carried there by the wind rather than by choice. Her only possession was a pink backpack—faded, torn at the seams, and hanging loosely from her shoulders. It sagged open, unzipped, exposing the frayed blond strands of a once-loved Barbie doll tangled in its outer pocket.

The larger pocket inside was empty.
Painfully empty.
It reminded me of her eyes.

Wide.
Blue.
Searching.
Guarded.

Eyes that had learned not to expect too much, eyes that carried the weight of rejection far too heavy for a child. She stood there with a cautious stillness, as if bracing for yet another goodbye before even being welcomed in.

I couldn’t help but wonder if her backpack was open because, deep down, she was hoping—maybe for the first time—that this would be the place where it could finally be filled. Not with toys or clothes, but with the things her heart had hungered for: safety, stability, tenderness… a sense of belonging.

Perhaps she was hoping that here, in this unfamiliar doorway, she might find her forever home — that this would be the place where her empty backpack, and her even emptier heart, could finally be filled.

And in a way, aren’t we all a little like her?
Carrying around our own invisible backpacks… longing for love, security, connection… hoping someone will see us, choose us, keep us. We search the world to fill what is empty, We chase security and affection in earthly places, but our truest fullness comes only when we allow God to be the One who fills us — gently, generously, completely.

God is able to fulfill our deepest spiritual needs, providing lasting peace, joy, and purpose, unlike worldly things that only offer temporary satisfaction, often requiring us to turn to Him through prayer, scripture, and connection with His presence to find true contentment.

Cotton candy is huge, colorful, and looks filling — but it disappears the moment it hits your tongue.  It’s all fluff and no nourishment and much of what the world offers is the same.

It looks good, it tastes sweet but it dissolves instantly and we are left feeling unsatisfied. That is how the world satisfies, incomplete and hollow, leaving us emptier than before.  But my friend, God gives what truly and deeply nourishes the soul.

So don’t wait—bring your empty backpack to God. Just like the little girl searching for her forever home, we, too, wonder if we can really be loved this time… if God might meet us at our own doorstep of uncertainty and lead us, just as gently, toward the forever home our souls have been searching for. Yes, He is patiently waiting to fill it with everything we need. He can and will satisfy your deepest longing and provide the security, love, and belonging your heart was made for.

When we come to God with our empty places—our needs, fears, disappointments, and desires—He does not turn us away. Instead, He fills us with His presence, His provision, and His unfailing love.

Your backpack may feel empty today, but in His hands, it will never stay that way.
